On September 6, 1911, eighteen ladies met in a family home to organize The Ladies Auxiliary of the Welsh Society of Cleveland, Ohio. Officers were elected and the history of what is now known as the Women's Welsh Clubs of America began.
The coming years were highlighted with tea parties, rummage sales and social events, as well as monthly Tuesday meetings. It was at one of those meetings that the decision was made to open the first Welsh Home. The year was 1919 and the site was Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights. The home soon filled and the search for more land and larger quarters began.
In 1922, the Welsh Home in Rocky River was opened. The original home was described as having "nine bedrooms, two living rooms and five bathrooms, as well as six cows, calves, a bull and a horse, with an orchard and garden." As the years passed, the need for a new home was apparent. In 1953, the original farm house was razed and construction of the present Welsh Home was underway.
This home now stands as a testament to the foresight, perseverence and hard work of the dedicated ladies of the Women's Welsh Clubs of America. It is a legacy of love offered to those who come here to live the fullness of their lives. Today, the Welsh Home represents one of the leading nursing homes in the State of Ohio. Welsh heritage is no longer a requirement for residency, however you will notice items of Welsh heritage displayed throughout our home.
The Welsh Home has a warm, pleasant atmosphere with a living room, dining room, year-round porch, courtyard and outdoor patio overlooking the duck pond. We are a Medicare and Medicaid certified facility with 79 beds licensed for skilled and intermediate nursing care and 12 beds licensed for rest home care. All rooms are private. All rooms are beautifully furnished, and include a private full or half bathroom.
